Estacaille Genealogy One Name Study
genealogy of the Estacaille (and variant spellings) families around the world
Have you ever thought about creating your own genealogy website? I discovered this English charity of passionate genealogists about a year or so ago, and decided last month to join as a member.
I’ve been researching my surname for several decades now, and have only a small portion of my work online. I’ve always been a bit concerned about building a website just to have it all disappear shortly after I die, with no one to look after it.
With the Guild of One-Name Studies I can build my genealogy site on their server, and continue to edit it as long as I renew my membership. Should my membership lapse, say if I die and a family member doesn’t take over as administrator, then the site becomes read-only, a legacy and doesn’t immediately disappear into the ethers. Another member can apply to take ownership if I don’t will it on to someone else.
The website can be just a simple blog style, or a TNG database (like the /genes portion of mine) or a combo of the two. There are helpful members that can help guide building a site from scratch or transferring a site from a hosting service into the Guild servers.
The website hosting service is just one of many resources available to members; I’m still learning it all. There’s directories of members, the surnames they are researching and linking member sites. There’s Guild registered societies, forums – public & members, webinars & other events, and a library of searchable records.
So in the near future, you will see this website stored there. In the meantime, if you’re already a Guild member, you’ll find me under:
